Abstract: In this series of lectures I will give a short, pedagogical, introduction to superstring theory and its applications. The first lecture is devoted to the quantisation of the superstrings and the constructions of consistent superstring theories in D=10. A special emphasis will be put on the GSO projection and the role of modular invariance of the one-loop partition function. The second lecture will deal with open strings and we shall introduce D-branes. Finally, in the third lecture I shall discuss the problem of compactification.
